Sexy Italian Wines

Sexy Italian Wines

Italy is home to more native grape varieties than any other country—over 500 officially recognized and countless more yet to be classified. This month, Unrooted is bringing you the "Sexy Italians"—a lineup of wines that exude character, complexity, and undeniable charm.

In addition to the usual Sangiovese and Nebbiolo we're showcasing grapes with deep historical roots and modern relevance. From the volcanic soils of Campania, where Aglianico thrives with bold tannins and dark fruit, to the alpine terraces of Valtellina, where Nebbiolo takes on a more elegant, mineral-driven form, these wines are a masterclass in terroir. Each bottle tells a story of place, climate, and winemaking tradition, offering a chance to taste Italy as locals do.

Unique Varietals

Many of the wines in this collection highlight Italy’s hidden gems—varieties that have been cultivated for centuries but are only now gaining recognition outside the country.

Pecorino, once nearly extinct, has made a stunning comeback in the hills of Umbria, offering bright acidity and layered citrus notes. Ribolla Gialla, an ancient white variety from Friuli, is prized for its structure and ability to age, while Rondinella, best known as a blending grape in Amarone, reveals its vibrant red fruit and spice when given the spotlight.

These wines aren’t just about tradition—they reflect Italy’s modern shift toward organic, biodynamic, and sustainable farming, preserving old vineyards and reviving forgotten varieties.

This month’s "Sexy Italians" selection is an invitation to explore, learn, and appreciate the diversity of Italy’s wine heritage—because nothing is more seductive than a wine with a story.
